Nora Barry and Mary Prescott claim in their essay 'Beyond Words: The Impact of Rhythm as Narrative Technique in The Left Hand of Darkness' (1992) that U. K. Le Guin "attempt[s] to introduce readers to a mystery by referring in her novel [Left Hand] to truths that are misunderstood when they are anchored to everyday logic" (1992: 154). If one wants to obtain the wholeness of being, then one needs to be willing to search for the mysterious aspects of that being. This thesis, it has attempted to focus on the more mysterious truths that are discussed in the science fiction of Le Guin, by using the weird archetypes of the anima and animus through which to understand the characters in her science fiction. The focus has been on the material used by Le Guin and Jung because their writings illustrate that there is much more to being human than meets the eye. Things are not what they seem to be. Le Guin's novel introduces the reader to a mystery: the mystery of an odyssey the characters can take in order to move from psychic immaturity to self-knowledge. Jung's archetypal theory of anima/animus has provided one way to perceive the mysteries that lie beneath, in and around the surface life of a human being, male, female or androgynous, which are often illustrated in the journey embarked on by Le Guin's characters. 

     Le Guin's characters' experiences often demonstrate painful conflicts that lead to self-examination and psychic growth. Le Guin's work often involves confrontation with others, both external and internal. Each of these confrontations necessarily requires that the characters delve deeper inside themselves in order to learn about all that they are. Her characters' experiences have archetypal natures that undertake an external journey that illustrates an `internal journey towards individuation. The main characters that occur in the selected novel are multi-dimensional human beings who do not experience life simply or straightforwardly. Of all the conflicts they handle, their serious conflicts are fundamentally found within themselves. Knowing who they are true will let them know more obviously all that they can do. As they learn more about themselves, each of these characters finds the unconscious activity of the Anima/animus: a feminine/masculine capacity that directly impacts how they feel and decide to live out their conscious lives. They do not recognize this activity as anima/animus functioning on the course of the plot, but their extended awareness of their unconscious life, which it is recognized as anima/animus functioning, brings about conscious confrontation and transformation. The extent to which each character encounters his own anima/animus shows the extent to which he obtains individuation and maturity.
